Schools Out . . . Temperatures a Rising

Schools out in most areas! The temperature is rising. It is the good old hot summertime. I checked one of the tubs with water and there are plenty of tadpoles swimming around. I filled up one of the dogs water buckets and there was a big frog in there. I guess they can get out when they are tired of swimming.



I am also seeing a lot more chipmunks. One goes under the horse trailer I call him Skippy. The cardinals and doves stay inside the goat pen looking for food the goats left behind.



I am keeping my eyes open for the giant turtle that wandered through the yard last year. He had to be old he was huge. He surveyed the yard checked out the goat pen and went along his merry way. There are some good things to not having an air conditioner you tend to go outside to get some cooler air.


I have found the perfect place for a hammock on the days it is not drumming in the sky. It has been doing that with no production of rain. I just unplug the computer and find something else to do until it is done.



I rescued an umbrella at the recycle center and the dog is using it to keep the sun away during the high noon heat. I thought about using it for the pig but she has her own shade when the sun goes over I am going to add some more cover for her that reflects the sun. I change her water frequently so she can wade in to cool off.

Summers Delight Coming In To The Holiday

Let's make a deal? I always like a good deal. This one I could not turn down. I said when are you getting more of these? He said, "next day or two." the one I had was going bad but the others did not look great. I had purchased one a day before and they were sweet as candy. He said I will mark it down to a dollar, well that was fifty cents cheaper then he said take them all for five bucks. Well for 9 sweet as candy cantaloupes I said, "bag them."



The cashier said he gave them to you. I go,  no he said I could pay five bucks they were not given to me I had to pay for them. Best buy on fruit, well except for the free ones that we produce ourselves. This gave me something to do in the p.m. I was peeling and cutting the fruit some of it will go to the freezer but in the middle of a hot afternoon there is nothing better. The rest belongs to the pig for a snack and the compost pile to make more good feeder for it.



I am still nurturing the plants at home waiting to see what kind of produce will come. I had a goat thinking she should eat the strawberries not sure if the plants were the draw or the hay that is protecting them but she had one almost consumed and I had to plant the roots again. I could not find the spray handle on the hose fast enough. I had to put this one in this is what summer is all about.

Unwrap Yourself . . . Brings On More Time Outside

Well I found out the round bale of hay will unwrap itself. I have been spoiled using the square bales (not sure why they are called square) they are definitely a rectangle.



I was fortunate to have someone help me locate a source for round bales as the square bale source dried up. I had been peeling it off and didn't think to much about it until yesterday. It removed itself from the round and splattered on the ground until it ran into a tree.



Needless to say it had to go somewhere and someone had to take care of it. It sure takes up a lot of room when it is loose. I filled up the back of one shed and three appliance boxes and I wonder why my back feels like it does today. Remember the work you did the day before.



I just need to figure out what I did wrong so it does not happen again. One lady said tie a rope around it and leave the net on, mine came with twine but no net. I guess the idea would be to peel it off the whole thing and not give it a chance to get heavy and dislocate itself. Or have the bale bumped up against the tree.



It is getting way to hot to be moving the stuff back and forth. It's okay to get it to the horses three times a day but not moving it all at one time.  One site said you could cut it with a chainsaw not sure how that works.

Strawberries With a Kiss Of Dew!

Strawberries are coming right along. I took the hay that the feed store said was good for horses and I said not mine. It makes beautiful mulch around the strawberry plants. It is supposed to help keep the weeds down and hold moisture and keep the roots cool. I am all for making the little plants berry producers.



This is the first year that I have gotten them to grow without interference of the wild rabbits and the goats foraging. That is definitely an accomplishment. I have left plants outside and before I got those planted they were consumed by the wild bunnies.



This year is going to be a productive one now I have to find a way to keep the birds out. I think the old chicken wire will do just fine on top of the cages where the strawberries are growing. I might just use the plastic mesh to keep them out as it has been terrorizing the snakes when they get caught. They seem to be able to get in, but not to clever to release themselves.



I am not sure if the rhubarb is coming up because when I planted it I really saw no difference in the ends so it might be trying to grow the wrong way. I hope it decides to show and then next year I can enamor my taste buds with strawberry rhubarb pie or other great desserts. Just reminds me of home, but it was easier to grow them up north where it is not so hot.

What Makes Roosters Tick?

What makes roosters tick? I thought it was just going in bare legged, but I was spurred with my long jeans on and it hurts for a long, long time. Seems the Roo is doing his job protecting his girls and you either show him you're the alpha or back away and not take on the fighting stance. 


I was checking for eggs so I guess he thought I did not belong there. They say if you are feeding he does not think you are encroaching on his turf.  I was politely giving him a baptism every time he came after me.


One site said carry him around for 10 minutes for three weeks and then you will be the alpha Roo the other one told me to grab him and hang him upside down until he quit showing out. Duh! How are you going to do that when he is showing himself.


They also said keep the little ones away as they think they are predators, both the grandsons got spurred if I had known they would have not gotten close.


Of course, the little one was two and he went to see the horse pet his nose nicely and then made a fist and reared back and hit the horse in the face. Unbeknown to him I was watching and told him I did not want to see that behavior again.



I guess I will continue to carry a big stick and watch for the behavior and give him a wide berth. He is beautiful just full of himself, and if he wants to be the alpha go for it just do not hurt me again.

Oh the things we learn from our animals...

Oh the things we learn from our animals... It was another hot day! I was watering the plants and the pig "Daisy" was pushing her pool around. I dipped my hand in and you could cook the water was so hot. I took the hose and filled it up and it made the water cooler and the first thing she did was jump in and cool off. She wanted me to know that it would not be refreshing in very hot water and this is the way she likes to cool down. This is Daisy as a little pig she is so much bigger now.

The other thing she just enjoys is being brushed, but we do that after the sun goes down or early in the morning. She is in ecstasy when someone brushes her she will just spread herself out so you can reach more.

 
The mama bird is tending her eggs she had a nest above the window and I wondered if she would repair it or if it should come down. She put her all into it and it works just as good as new. It is kind of like us when we remodel she added and made it strong for her new clutch. As long as no one goes near it she is cuddling those eggs.

 

I found another great trick with the goats they were not co-operating so I turned on the nozzle on the hose and they ran like someone was chasing them with dynamite. Now after a few days all I need to do is pick it up and they take off. I sure wish I had known this years ago.

Do You Have To Be Old . . .

Do you have to be old to watch the weather? It never occurred to me to check and see what the weather was when I was younger. Now it is at the top of the list. Summer not so much do not really want to know how hot it is going to be. With the garden planted it is okay if it rains so they will get the much needed watering. If not, it falls on me and the water hose from the well.
 
I watched a very informative YouTube video about keeping green onions all through the summer. He said that it is easy to find the onion sets everywhere during spring season The trouble was finding them when you want to plant them later in the season. He had seen this on another site how to make your onions grow all summer long.
 
He said to cut off the last 1/2 inch and take that and put in a cup of water. Recommending soaking them in the water before planting to re-nourish the roots. Then, you take that piece of onion and the roots and replant it. He even said it would work if you went to the store and bought some onions, cut them off and plant them.
 
I do not know about you even if I did not like onions I will have to try this out just to see if it works. I know; there are many plants that can become more like avocado pits, sweet potatoes grow beautiful vines, pineapple tops.  I do not know why this would not work an eye of a spud grows more potatoes.

I hope you had a pleasant May Day! Here comes summer! Seasons seem to change faster as we get older, not sure quite why. I enjoy it when everything turns green except for the snakes invading my chicken pen.



I feed the chickens and want the eggs for myself. I am going to sprinkle lime inside and out to see if that will help and staple up the leftover screen to let the air blow in and keep the sneaky snakes at bay.
